Norman Tower

Bury St Edmunds

Constructed in the period 1120 to 1148 under Abbot Anselm, the Norman Tower stands opposite the end of Churchgate Street. It was the gateway to the abbey (completed in 1095) and also the bell tower to the adjacent church of St James (now St Edmundsbury Cathedral). Photographs from my survey below. Work undertaken whilst working for English Heritage.
