Once one of the most powerful Benedictine monasteries in England the abbey became the resting place of the relics of king St Edmund, the martyred Anglo-Saxon king.

The abbey was founded in 1020 and was hugely successful until its suppression in 1539. I surveyed the ruins in December and have uploaded a few of my (cold looking) images. Work undertaken for English Heritage.
